Thinning the forest maintenance includes cleaning up debris after storms when you have a forest or woods on your property.

Equipment

It helps to have the proper equipment. A chainsaw is a must. You should trim off limbs near the top of the tree for use for firewood and then cut the trunk into usable lengths called ‘bucking’. A tractor with a chain is needed to pull logs out of the woods. A grapple to pick up the limb debris is very helpful for cleanup. A log splitter is needed for firewood production.

Procedure

First is limbing the fallen trees to get a clean trunk. The upper limbs and side limbs are trimmed off. Next is cutting the trunks into usable lengths, usually 6 to 10 feet lengths. Then the logs are moved out of the woods. Once the logs are removed, use a tractor or skid steer with a grapple to clean up the limb debris.

Disposition

In my case, the limb debris is put in a burn pile or can be chipped and shredded if you have that equipment. Once the logs are out of the woods, they can be cut into usable lengths for firewood or left long to process on a sawmill to make boards. Firewood length is 16 to 20-inch lengths. I then split the firewood logs, called rounds, with a gas-powered log splitter. Alternatively, the rounds can be split by hand with a maul and wedges. Then the split wood is stacked to dry.

Children have less complex security needs, though not less critical A child needs to be secure in housing, food, and nurturing parents, as well as family and neighbors that look out for them. Educational requirements are mandated, as well as education by parents on societal norms that contribute to the safety and security of the child. Some interpersonal relationships can develop that affect the child’s security; bullying comes to mind. These should be co-managed by family and educators, depending on the circumstances.

As we mature, security evolves with food and shelter, financial safety and emotional security, and gaining integration into society. As part of personal development, education to allow one to work and earn a living is a prominent issue. Along with working, health and spiritual development contributes to a sense of safety and security.

Developing interpersonal relationships are one factor that also includes trust and honesty, which contribute to safety and security. An emotional side includes personal development and taking care of oneself, including physical and intellectual exercise. Marriage and children, and family may also contribute to security.

Having security in one’s life is one building block of becoming a man.

As we grow and mature, our focus is less inward and becomes more diffuse. There is a sense of empathy for fellow man, that leads to charity. This is an antonym to selfishness. Along our journey to becoming a man, we strive to develop honesty, security, and conformation to societal norms. Emotional security has stabilized, and empathy toward others develops. We feel able to give back some of what we have obtained, as either teaching, , helping, or supporting others in their endeavors. One caveat that I have noticed is that some who choose not to help themselves, may not benefit much from helping them, rather they are content to be beggars, for lack of a better word. The causation of such behavior and attitudes is beyond the scope of the current discussion. There is personal satisfaction in helping others, which helps develop a sense of self-worth and avoid selfishness. These are ideals to which to strive. It enhances the goal of becoming a man.

Our path to becoming a man includes building a sense of community. That is we integrate into society, and achieve some of the same attitudes and interests that are shared by our peers.

This is not to mean that we are not individuals, and have disparate ideas, but more that we see commonality with those in the community, and tend to gravitate to similar ideals. This may explain some of the cultural differences that are seen, where values and mores are different.

Emotional development is dependent on family values and emotional support to a large extent. As a child grows, a nurturing family will instill some emotional cues and guidelines. As children interact with other people they also get cues on emotions. They learn love and affection, fear and anger, anxiety and peace, and many more subtle emotive states. These continue to develop throughout life.

Personality traits go hand in hand with emotional development. There is no one perfect emotional state to achieve, rather it is more a striving for more of the positive traits and fewer of the negative traits. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) lists 638 primary personality traits, of which 234 are positive, 292 are neutral, and 292 are negative traits.

Emotional development relies on honesty and integrity to be stable. Trust and and honor contribute with self-image and security.

Part of becoming a man is social development. As we grow and mature, we engage with others in a social setting. Initial socialization occurs in the home with parenting, interaction with other children, and teachers. This transitions to more interaction with other people and educators. Later this is the work environment and society.

The rules for social interaction are first learned as a child. There are cultural norms and societal norms. There is etiquette that is learned. As a young adult, many of these rules are tested, challenged, and sometimes abandoned. Sometimes there are consequences to these actions, and sometimes it’s just a learning experience.

However, societal norms are longstanding, and eventually, most people return to some semblance of coordination with these rules. These rules and etiquette form the basis for interpersonal interactions, and as such, society at large.

Social development entails the eventual observation of these interpersonal societal rules and the adoption to a greater degree of this etiquette.

As part of becoming a man, personal development is important. Taking care of oneself physically, health-wise, emotionally, and spiritually are predominant features.

Physical fitness in the sense of taking action and promoting health is salient. Numerous recommendations for movement and exercise are encouraged. Eating healthily and avoiding detrimental habits also help.

Work and working are aspects of personal development. Being honest trustworthy and consistent go a long way toward work-life satisfaction. Having pursuits outside of work also contribute to stability and personal development.

Fostering relationships with friends and family is another branch of personal development. Having children and teaching them is another developmental fork.

Spirituality as part of personal development is understanding that one is not the center of the universe. Whether that is a god or church, a religious belief, or something else, it is the idea that one is part of the universe, and dependent on others as they are dependent on them. This is relevant to community where people help and understand one another.

Children grow up and learn manners at home and in school. These are some of the first steps to maturing. There is approval and love, as well as rules. Consistent development entails learning and following ‘normal’ behaviors and emotions. There is a period of testing limits and challenging norms of behavior and society, which transitions to acceptable social interaction.

As development progresses, some essential features are discovered and learned. Honesty is integral in both interactions with others, as well as self-assessment. Building upon honesty is trust, both of oneself and others, and includes the ability to be trusted.

As personality develops, the character becomes the summation of personality traits. Fairness, openness, consistency, empathy, faithful, and agreeableness are positive personality traits that becoming a man would emulate. Charity is part of the character and develops as a man develops self-confidence and empathy for others.

Becoming a man is a process that doesn’t happen suddenly but develops on building blocks, successes and failures, and interactions with others. We will delve into these topics as this blog develops.
